Editorial; Why is Student Union Election Important?

Students' Union is a ritual in every tertiary institution both in Nigeria, Africa, and the whole universe. It is a voluntary organization owned and controlled by students. It is a union that helps students to identify more with their peers and their school and l, and it fosters a strong foundation for networking in the future, not only do student unions help commuting students feel at home, but they also help them feel more involved.

Students'Union is an incubating stage of socio-political leadership where students could learn rudiments of how people, states, and nations are governed. It is typically an organized body of students committed to defending the interest of their fellow students.

The purpose of this organization is to represent students both within the institution and externally including on local and national issues. Students' Union is also tasked with the responsibility of providing numerous services to students through different offices which can only be occupied by vibrant, courageous, capable students who act as political young stars, passionate and willing to serve others.

It is worth mentioning that the Students' Union is a political organization where political young stars showcase their interest in politics by competing with their mates in a political position which is to prepare them for the great competitions ahead. Students' Union is a regulated organization backed up by its constitutions, and school management alongside the division of student affairs. It can enforce the law on its own through its legislative organ and exercise certain powers that could sometimes overrule school management powers.

An electoral commission provided by the school management is established and is charged with the responsibility of registering, screening, and verifying eligible candidates and most importantly conducting free, fair, and credible elections. 
An Electoral Petition is also put in place to handle all complaints arising after the election, with a high sense of duty and decency, without fear or favor.
 Eligibility of contending in most cases is strictly based on CGPA, meaning that a contender must have a specific CGPA in other to qualify for the post (s)he aspires.

Only a student who has spent a minimum of 3 semesters on Obafemi Awolowo University campus, also with a valid Students Identity Card is eligible to vote and be voted for at the Students' Union level. All 100-level undergraduate students can neither vote nor be voted for at the Students'Union level as a result of this, they can only canvass, support, or be an agetheiririr preferred candidate.

Thursday 1st of June, 2021 is the next Greatife Students' Union election, all qualified students are advised to cast their vote for their preferred candidates without violence and debunk any form of illegal activities which may tamper or jeopardize the peace on the OAU campus.

PROTESTERS HALT ONGOING CLASS, ORDER STUDENT OUT

Sequel to the death of a fellow student, many OAU students have taken to the street to make known their grief and dissatisfaction about the jungle justice made by the great Awo resident that led to the death of a part 5 student of the faculty of technology.  Currently, the peaceful protesters blocked the main road leading to the campus gate, leaving many stranded and some trekking their way to and off campus.  Likewise, a hold has been put on lectures as the protestors are seen chasing people out of the lecture room and demanding that all students return to their various hostels.  One such was witnessed when a class held at the amphitheater was interrupted by the protesters and the over 500 students present were ordered out of the place, although students are still present around the academics area and there was no case of violence as of now.  This amongst many other activities hindrance of transportation has been the aftermath of the recent incident.            Did you know that the bats on the campus of OAU have a fascinating history?   The story begins in the 1960s when the university was established. As the buildings and trees started to take shape, bats were attracted to the lush environment. Over time, they made the campus their home, creating a unique ecosystem. These bats play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the campus ecosystem. They are insectivorous, meaning they feed on insects, helping to control the population of pests such as mosquitoes. This is especially important in a tropical climate like Nigeria where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent. The university has embraced the presence of bats and has even set up bat boxes to provide them with suitable roosting places.
