    We live in an era where social media is rapidly taking over almost every aspect of our lives. With 62.3% of the world’s population using social media, more than half of the global community has access to information online. Social media has transformed the world into a global village, enabling instant information sharing, facilitating online business transactions, and harnessing artificial intelligence to make human work easier. These advancements would have been unimaginable centuries ago.


    Social media’s impact is so profound that unverified information can spread like wildfire, becoming the perceived truth. It’s a double-edged sword, capable of catapulting individuals to fame and wealth in seconds, while also ruining lives and tarnishing reputations built over decades. As a neutral entity, social media can be both a lethal weapon in the wrong hands and a game-changer in the right ones.

• Here are some examples of Africans who have been brought to the limelight through social media:

~ Nasty C (Nsikayesizwe Ngcobo) – Rapper who gained popularity through his social media presence and freestyle videos.

~ Rema (Divine Ikubor) – Singer and rapper who was discovered through social media and signed to Mavin Records.

There are several examples of people whose lives were negatively impacted by social media.

 Here are a few:

~Amanda Todd: A Canadian teenager who was cyberbullied and harassed on social media, leading to her suicide in 2012.

~Justine Sacco: A PR executive who tweeted a controversial joke about AIDS and Africa in 2013, leading to a massive backlash and loss of her job.

    It’s disheartening that many people have access to this powerful tool but lack the knowledge to harness its full potential. While some neglect social media’s advantages, others utilize it to transform their lives and shape the world. With social media, the world is at your fingertips. Learn to utilize it effectively.

PROTESTERS HALT ONGOING CLASS, ORDER STUDENT OUT

Sequel to the death of a fellow student, many OAU students have taken to the street to make known their grief and dissatisfaction about the jungle justice made by the great Awo resident that led to the death of a part 5 student of the faculty of technology.  Currently, the peaceful protesters blocked the main road leading to the campus gate, leaving many stranded and some trekking their way to and off campus.  Likewise, a hold has been put on lectures as the protestors are seen chasing people out of the lecture room and demanding that all students return to their various hostels.  One such was witnessed when a class held at the amphitheater was interrupted by the protesters and the over 500 students present were ordered out of the place, although students are still present around the academics area and there was no case of violence as of now.  This amongst many other activities hindrance of transportation has been the aftermath of the recent incident. As the buildings and trees started to take shape, bats were attracted to the lush environment. Over time, they made the campus their home, creating a unique ecosystem. These bats play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the campus ecosystem. They are insectivorous, meaning they feed on insects, helping to control the population of pests such as mosquitoes. This is especially important in a tropical climate like Nigeria where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent. The university has embraced the presence of bats and has even set up bat boxes to provide them with suitable roosting places.
