FRESHMEN ORIENTATION DAY 3; THE HISTORY OF OAU BATS
Did you know that the bats on the campus of OAU have a fascinating history?
The story begins in the 1960s when the university was established. As the buildings and trees started to take shape, bats were attracted to the lush environment. Over time, they made the campus their home, creating a unique ecosystem.
These bats play a crucial role in maintaining the balance of the campus ecosystem. They are insectivorous, meaning they feed on insects, helping to control the population of pests such as mosquitoes. This is especially important in a tropical climate like Nigeria where mosquito-borne diseases are prevalent.
The university has embraced the presence of bats and has even set up bat boxes to provide them with suitable roosting places. These boxes mimic the natural cavities bats would find in trees, ensuring their continued presence on campus.
So next time you see a bat flying around OAU, remember that they have a rich history on this campus and that they are contributing to the ecological well-being of the University.
